fatBuzz has got that little bit fatter

Derek Howie is a first-class honours journalism graduate, whose work has appeared in publications including The Scottish Sun, STV and tilllate magazine. He has been rewarded for his academic endeavours with many personal accolades, including the 2011 and 2012 UWS Court Medal for Journalism and the 2009 and 2010 Glasgow Metropolitan College HND Journalism prize. He also came runner up in the 2010 Write Stuff College Sports Writing award.

Throughout his time as a freelance journalist and student of journalism, he has learned many valuable skills which he will look to bring to the fatBuzz office, including the ability to build and maintain credible relationships and the ability to create regular, vibrant and effective content.

As well as his experience in journalism, Derek also has significant knowledge and understanding of social media marketing and website and social network site management. He is extremely passionate about social media and has written widely about its benefits and implications to journalists and businesses, as well as researching it as part of his dissertation study into journalists’ use of social media as a newsgathering tool.

Before he embarked on a career in journalism, and subsequently social media with fatBuzz, Derek previously played professional football for Dunfermline Athletic Football Club, where he ultimately spent more time on the treatment table than he did on the football pitch.

Away from the office, Derek considers himself as something of an 'electronic music aficionado' and during his time at tilllate magazine, he interviewed electronic music pioneers such as Pete Tong, Slam, Ellen Allien, Agoria, Markus Shulz and Breakage. Incidentally, Gordon has no idea who any of those artists are!

While studying at college and university over the past four years, Derek spent copious amounts of time on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, WordPress, Blogger, YouTube and iTunes. He never imagined that four years later, that procrastination would prove so worthwhile.

April New Media Breakfast - The new Facebook Timeline Pages explored

MAKING THE MOST OF FACEBOOK TIMELINE PAGES
27th April 2012
29 Members Club, Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow

Facebook Timeline for pages has arrived and as from the 30th March all Facebook Pages will be transferred to the new timeline layout.  The changes are radical and will mean every page user has to adapt to the new layout and, the new functionality.  In some cases, this will mean a fundamental change in the way people operate their pages and for some it may mean they are not able to do some of the things they have done with their page in the past.

The new timeline layout is very different and the new functionality offers many new opportunities for businesses and brands to engage with their communities.  The New Media Breakfast will highlight the changes to the pages and explore the ways that you can take advantage of the new timeline layout and the new functionality.

fatBuzz has been busy over the past month changing the layouts for around 100 pages that we manage for clients; we will use some of these to demonstrate what you can do to engage and reach out to your community.  We will show you live examples of what others are doing on their pages and provide some ideas to help you promote your page and grow your community.

We will look at the following:
  • Branding
  • Tabs and iFrame Pages
  • Using the timeline
  • New functionality
  • Liking, Commenting, Sharing and Tagging
  • Photos and Video
  • Syndicating content to your page
  • Insights
  • Advertising
  • SEO
The presentation will also take a look at Facebook Insights and show you how you can use the information available from Facebook to track the effectiveness of your activity and your individual posts.

FACEBOOK AND SEO
We will take a fresh look at the impact and potential impact of Facebook on SEO. These are not specifically as a result of the new Timeline layout but we will take the opportunity to update you about the changes and how to maximise the SEO value of your Facebook activity.

YOUR QUESTIONS
We are also keen to answer any questions you may have about the new Facebook Pages or, Facebook in general so, please feel free to send us any questions in advance to gordon@fatbuzz.com or post them as a comment on the blog or on the New Media Breakfast Facebook page.

THE SPEAKERS
The Facebook Timeline breakfast will be presented by Gordon White, Managing Director, fatBuzz Ltd and Tim Barlow, Managing Director of Attacat.

Social Media Podcast 44 now available - the "P" Edition

The latest Social Media Podcast is now available for download with the usual banter and light hearted chat about all things social media. Taking part in Social Media podcast Episode 44 we have Gordon White,  Kyle Murdoch, Kirsty Hunter, and Iain Murray.

One common theme seemed to be the letter "P" on this podcast - Pinterest, Pin-It and, Pages were just some of the topics.  I must confess immediately that I learned something since we recorded this podcast; when discussing Twitter's recent acquisition, Iain talked about "Posterious" which I questioned on the podcast thinking it should be "Posterus", which I've since found out could be from the Latin posterus 'following'.  In fact, we were both wrong; the name is Posterous.  Perhaps our friendly expert Linguist, Sally Goetsch can shed some light on what the name might mean?

We also discuss the launch of the new iPad 3 (the podcast was recorded the same day as the UK launch) and we ask why their didn't seem to be the usual buying frenzy surrounding this release.  In fact, we ask if the Glasgow Apple Store really needed the crowd barriers that were neatly stacked outside the shop which was well stocked with the new iPad even at 3pm on launch day.

The good news is that we managed to keep this podcast under one hour but, we still manage to cram in lots of chat from the world of social media including:
  • The iPad3 - Iain and I managed to sneak a look at the latest offering from Apple just before we recorded the podcast.  We also discuss the fact that there didn't appear to be the same buying frenzy this time around.
  • Unfortunately, Tesco don't honour online errors in the same way that Zappos did last year
  • ClikThis App
  • Still no natve Android Apps for DIGG or Pinterest
  • Posterous - we discuss the sale to Twitter, even if we do get the name wrong!
  • Facebook's IPO - Is it already reshaping Facebook.  We also mention how the disclosures are starting to filter through with recent acknowledgements that the number of unique users could have been overstated by 40 million and, the large number of pending law suits against them.
  • Facebook Timeline for Pages - the new Page layout and how that will affect the way some organisations operate their business pages
  • fatBuzz's new "Infographic" page on Facebook
  • Steve Jobs doll, we get a comprehensive answer courtesy of the Morton Fraser Podcast on Image Rights
  • Pinterest - Is it a 'girly' tool and what's making it so popular at the moment.  We also discuss the various copyright issues that are emerging around Pinterest
  • Influence measurements platforms like Klout - how accurate are they?  We look at various platforms such as: TweetReach, PeerIndex, Klout, Tweetstats, Crowd Booster, Twenty Feet and, My Web Career
  • Social Media Monitoring tools - are they overpriced?
  • ROI - will it become less of an issue for organisations?
  • Scheduled Tweets - good or bad practice?  Also, see Jennifer Holloways guest blog on this topic
  • Kony2012 - Is it all it appears to be?  Most of our team didn't really trust the video.
  • Consumption - How often do you watch 100% of a video or, read 100% of an article or blog post?
  • Tim Barlow from Attacat asks, "Are bloggers who charge contributors for guest posts right to do so? Is there better way to monitise a blog?"   We would like to discuss this in greater detail on Podcast 45 so, if you have an opinion please get in touch via the comments below. Or, perhaps you would be willing to come on the podcast and discuss it. Thank you to Tim for the suggestion.
We hope you enjoy the podcast, if you have any comments to make or topics you would like us to discuss please leave them here on the blog or on our Facebook Page.

Why do you Tweet?

It occurred to me today that social media is a bit like football. The teams we support are the media we favour using and we can get quite ‘tribal’ about that (how often have you expressed disbelief that someone isn’t using the same channel as you?) And just like football, we can all behave like fantasy-league managers when it comes to discussing ‘team tactics’ ie how you should use your media of choice.

Take Twitter for instance. fatBuzz’s Gordon White and I both tweet but, as I found out during a natter following a recent New Media Breakfast, the ‘birth’ of our 140 character ramblings is very different.

Gordon’s belief is that your tweets should be entirely ad hoc and done at a time when you’re free to respond should anyone pick up on them. For example, when he tweets about an upcoming fatBuzz event and someone replies, “Looking forward to it,” he tweets a comment back there and then. For Gordon, Twitter is primarily about interaction.

For me, Twitter is more about keeping on people’s radars, with the odd bit of interaction leading from that, and using it as a channel to give people clues to who you are and what you have to offer ie your personal brand. So I approach my tweets differently (what can I say…doing things ‘my way’ is a theme of my brand!)

I’m a big fan of schedulers – in my case Hootsuite and Buffer – as they allow me to take part in the Twittersphere despite my mare of a diary meaning I’m seldom free to tweet when I need/want to. So I sit for half an hour on a Sunday and set up a mix of messages for the coming week – some sharing information from others, some sharing my own knowledge eg blogs and some giving a ‘shout out’ to other Tweeters I’m due to meet or who have retweeted me recently. Schedulers also allow me to consider the wording of my messages so they give people the right impression of my personal brand through my language and links – well, I’ve got to walk the talk, haven’t I?

I then add to those with other (infrequent) messages on the hoof, when I have time to reply, to get a bit more of that ‘in the moment’ banter Gordon rates (which I agree, is a real bonus of Twitter). A case in point was a question I posed the evening I was off to a football match, asking what people recommended I do to stay warm (I started the ball rolling with a suggestion that I just eat pies). I got a few replies - most of them sensible, though one wit told me having a fondue was the way to go - and I tweeted back, strengthening my online relationships with those people.

Unlike football though, there’s no offside rule to give guidance on the state of play; no-one decrees how you should use Twitter. It’s more important to have a clear idea what you want it to achieve and how you’ll go about doing that…and then do it your way.

So how do you use it?

Why you should invest £1.49 ($2.30) in a QR Code Reader

QR Codes are becoming increasingly popular and brands are starting to realise the potential they offer for delivering something special to the user. There is generally a greater understanding and acceptance that the QR Code landing page has to deliver a positive experience for the user; QR Codes that simply take you to the landing page of your regular web site are generally a bit of a let down. However, a code that takes you to a relevant piece of video, discount voucher, podcast, free download, or something to do with a specific campaign will usually be a positive user experience.

Brands are also catching on to the ability to customise their QR Codes and make them more visibly appealing. However, there is a problem that may stifle creativity, sub standard QR Code Readers, or sub standard mobile devises or, a combination of both.

QR Codes can be altered substantially which allows us to be fairly creative with design and colour combinations however, it is frustrating that we have to design codes within the limitations of the hundreds of free QR Code Readers that simply don't do the job.

We generally test each code on eight different code readers; seven of them are free applications and one is a paid application (Optiscan) and we are not happy to release a design unless it scans on all seven of the free code readers. Invariably, we have to amend the design to ensure this will happen and in doing so we usually have to compromise our design.

It is also interesting to note that we have never seen a QR Code that doesn't scan in the paid app that does scan in the free apps. It is also worth noting that one of these free apps; i-nigma usually matches the performance of the paid app.

Here's a simple demonstration; we recently created the QR Code below as an experiment - the one on top scans perfectly using Optiscan and i-nigma but not the six other free apps. The one beneath it shows how much we had to "dim down" the design in order for it to work on the six other free apps. Try it on your scanner.

Therefore, you have a choice - invest in a decent QR Code Scanner such as Optiscan or, at the very least, get i-nigma.

Below you will see a selection of QR Codes we have created recently, if you would like to see them and others in more detail please click here to see them in out Facebook gallery.

As the Giant Pandas arrive in Scotland, Dean’s is released into the wild…

Travelling North on Thursday I listened to the news story about the long awaited arrival of two giant pandas in Scotland, I wondered if we would ever see the day that a panda cub is released into it’s natural habitat to enjoy life in the wild. I realised the purpose of my trip had striking similarities to that scenario; I was going to visit Dean’s to start the transition from fatBuzz managing their social media to them doing it internally.

Dean’s now feel comfortable about managing their social media presence and I am confident that they will manage it and, continue to grow their highly engaged community. Dean’s is a great client, they listen to advice, they have embraced social media, they opted for an organic growth and, they committed to the plan – now they are reaping the rewards.

The main thrust of their social media presence are the blog, Facebook page and, Twitter. However, they are now starting to enjoy success with video content on YouTube and phenomenal download numbers from their video podcast on iTunes. They have also adopted tools such as QR Codes; they have perhaps one of the best examples you’ll see in their recently published Recipe Book (Try scanning this QR Code lifted from the Scottish Scones page in the book).

Dean’s opted for an organic growth in order to build a relevant community that wants to engage with the brand. Yes, we did run the odd competition but only if it was relevant to Dean’s product range. They were patient in the development of the community and they trusted the plan to attract fans and followers with good, interesting, relevant and, regular content; they avoided big giveaways and irrelevant promotions and that will now pay dividends.

Visits to the blog are very healthy and growing, “likes” on their Facebook page are increasing everyday, followers on Twitter are multiplying but the team at Dean’s are not overly concerned with numbers; they are rightly concentrating on relevance and engagement rather than big numbers. The number of shares, likes, tweets, re-tweets, tags and, comments are the important figures for them. They are open to suggestions and willing to try things; likewise, they have made great suggestions based on their increased understanding of social media and how it works. They are not afraid to try things, neither are they overly concerned if not all of the initiatives are a resounding success.

It’s not the end of the relationship between fatBuzz and Dean’s; it’s the start of a new relationship. Much like a wildlife expert may tag a newly released cub in order to track it’s progress and keep a watchful eye, fatBuzz will adopt a “watching” brief, helping them if they require it. Moreover, we will continue to provide social media marketing ideas and keep them abreast of new tools as they emerge.

A year ago when we first met Dean’s, we said our aim was to get them to a stage where they could manage their own social media; it’s something we say to every client and we mean it. The client will always be more knowledgeable and passionate about their product than we can ever be, our role is to show them how build a community and how to transmit that knowledge and passion in an engaging manner. We are genuinely happy that Dean’s have reached this stage and that we have played a small part in helping them on the road to social media success.

I am increasingly frustrated at the numerous reports, surveys and, “research” that suggest businesses are not benefiting from social media. Certain people seem all too ready to report failure – but we don’t conduct surveys or commission research because many people fail their driving test, what’s the difference? They’ve done something wrong and they’ve failed. I firmly believe any organisation that claims social media participation was a failure has done it badly. Usually, they didn’t understand it or have a clear reason for doing it, they didn’t have a strategy and, they weren’t truly committed to it.

Fortunately, more and more brands like Dean’s are emerging and they will be the winners and here’s why:
  • they have a clearly defined strategy
  • they have adopted social media as part of their overall communications strategy
  • they have an excellent content strategy
These are the reasons why Dean’s will succeed and, why they are now ready to be released into the very natural habitat that is social media.

Oh, I almost forgot, they have a great team and a world-beating product range - I wonder if pandas like shortbread!
