Social Media or Search Engine Optimisation - THE FACE OFF

Social Media or Search Engine Optimisation - THE FACE OFF
29th June 2012
29 Members Club, Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow

We are often asked where businesses should spend their online marketing budget – Social Media or Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)? The answer is of course, both. Social Media and SEO are both essential for online success therefore you shouldn’t discard one in favour of the other; in fact, social media and SEO increasingly work hand-in-hand with each other.

So rather than battling it out for your budgets, regular New Media Breakfast speakers Gordon White (in the social media corner) and Tim Barlow (in the SEO corner) will take it in turns to share their (or your) very best online marketing tips in an attempt to win your vote. He who gets the most votes wins. He who wins?...well that's still to be decided.

We’re not sure how many tips we’ll get through but, don’t worry, we’ll prepare lots for you and you’ll leave the breakfast with lots of things to consider for optimising your Social and your Search.

The New Media Breakfast is all about sharing knowledge and helping to keep each other informed about the latest developments in new media, we would encourage you to submit any tips or tricks that you may have that you would like to share at the Breakfast. Or, you may have heard a tip for Social or SEO but you’re unsure about its effectiveness or credibility – please feel free to submit it to us beforehand and we can share the answers at the breakfast. Please send your tips or questions to @GordonWhite or @TimBarlow

Venue: 29 Member's Club, Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow
Date: Friday 29th June 2012

Social Media Podcast 46 - BrewDog vs Diageo and the clear winner is...Goliath!

This week a blog post promoted on Twitter became a global news story and it happened right here in Scotland.  BrewDog, a small Scottish brewer, had a fight with the mighty Diageo.

A genuine David vs Goliath and we decided Goliath was the clear winner!
Listen to the podcast to find out why.

Taking part in Social Media podcast Episode 46 we have Gordon White,  Kyle MurdochKirsty HunterIain Murray and a special guest, Gillian Linch or latest intern.

During the podcast Gordon uses the word "eejit" - a word printed on the mug he was drinking from at the time of recording: for the benefit of our overseas listeners, we though we should provide a definition of the word eejit.

EEJIT (ee-jit) Dialect, chiefly Scot. ~n. 1. idiot, simpleton, one not possessed of all their mental faculties; one who is unable to properly conduct their own affairs.

I'm not entirely sure why I was given this mug to drink from! You can purchase the mugs online here

As you can imagine, much of this podcast is about the social media implications of the BrewDog story but we do manage to cram in some other great chat from the world of social media including the following:
  • The new Facebook App store - Another place to find pointless  Apps!
  • LogosQuiz by AlicoD - A fun way to test your brand awareness
  • Twello - A directory for businesses on Twitter - but, is this social?
  • Quora - What's happened to it?
  • - A Google Chrome add on that enables relevant Twitter messages to appear on your search pages
  • Facebook Offers - How it works and, its viral possibilities
  • Facebook Offers - The real debate is a nuisance and will it put people off Facebook?
  • Google+ - Public hangouts or, should it be public hangings?
  • The New Media Breakfast - Contently Managed MD, Craig McGill and his forthcoming presentation about how the Whisky Industry uses social media
  • Facebook - A US Sheriff fires 6 staff for "liking" the Facebook pages of his political opponents
  • The Instagram Camera - A truly "iconic" design
  • Twitter - Were you one of the 55,000 whose data was breached?
  • Pinterest - Is the spamming issue costing them users?
  • Interactive Coat Hangers - Whatever next?
We hope you enjoy the podcast, if you have any comments to make or topics you would like us to discuss please leave them here on the blog or on our Facebook Page.
