Social Media Podcast 51 - Should kids be taught and allowed to use social media?

If you have been following the fatBuzz blog or keeping up-to-date with us on Facebook and Twitter, you will have no doubt noticed that there has been a lot of discussion recently around Internet safety and the increasing prevalence of underage social media use.

So, for Social Media Podcast 51, we decided to take it one step further and find out what education professionals think of social media and discover what exactly is being done to teach social media in Scottish schools.

fatBuzz's Derek Howie and Malcolm White visited EdICT Training's offices to discuss this contentious issue with Miriam Duffin, Pre-12 Contract Manager at EdICT Training, Laura McLean, headteacher of St Timothy's Primary School and John McGuirk, depute headteacher of St Timothy's Primary School.

Podcast No. 51 is packed with in-depth, informative conversation -and although it's an unusual line-up - there's the normal banter and light hearted fun you've come to expect when the Social Media Podcast team get together.

We discuss a whole range of issues related to social media, education, and Internet privacy, including:
  • Privacy - Are children aware of online privacy?
  • Age Limit - What age should children be allowed to use social media? Are children putting themselves at risk by pretending they are older online?
  • Education, education, education - Should social media be taught as a core module as part of our curriculum?
  • Schools are teaching about the dangers of social media - but is there enough focus on how powerful social media can be?
  • Is it time for a change of direction? Focus on the positives on social media rather than the negatives?
  • Who should be teaching social media? Should it primarily be teachers or parents?
  • Listen - Do we need to listen to children's opinions more?
  • 'Digital native' - Is this commonly used term a myth?
  • Cyber bullying - is it a serious problem?
  • Does social interaction limit personal interaction?
During the podcast, Laura asked if we would be willing to record a podcast with the St Timothy's Primary School pupils to discuss social media and shared learning, so watch out, that just might be Social Media Podcast 52!

This is a very informative podcast well worth listening to if you have young children or relatives, or simply if you are interested in social media and Internet safety.

We hope you enjoy the podcast. If you have any comments to make or topics you would like us to discuss in the future, please leave them here on the blog, or on our Facebook Page.

Content Explored...Not so much sharing, more of an Entrepreneurial Exchange!

The 3rd in our series of "Content Explored" blogs

At recent presentations and speaking engagements, I've been talking a lot about the power of sharing and how much you get back by simply giving away information and sharing knowledge. As author of "New Rules of Marking and PR", David Meerman Scott said in a video he very kindly did for me, "The more you give, the more you get". This advice is also shared by other luminaries like CC Champan (Content Rules), Mitch Joel, (Six Pixels of Separation) and Chris Brogan (Trust Agents).

I certainly concur with their beliefs. Through the New Media Breakfast and our Social Media Podcast, fatBuzz share information and knowledge that leads to engagement, enquiries, referrals, and ultimately more work. The New Media Breakfast, the Social Media Podcast, our blog, and some other speaking engagements are the only real form of marketing we do at fatBuzz - all of them involve sharing knowledge. It is true, the more you give, the more you get.

However, after speaking at an Entrepreneurial Exchange Supper Club event this week it occurred to me that what we get back is much more than referrals and new business. The format of these events is a short presentation by the speaker (in this case me) followed by a round table discussion over dinner about the speaker's topic (in this case Social Media Defined and Proving ROI). Therefore, I get to engage with 15 entrepreneurs about social media; I learn their views, fears, experiences, concerns, expectations, perceptions and much more.

How valuable is that for me? These Entrepreneurial Exchange members are experienced and successful business owners, their opinions matter to me because they are relevant and probably representative of many other businesses. By listening to them, I have a much clearer understanding about what people want to know and what they want to achieve through social media marketing. So, I reckon I finished the evening learning as much, if not more, than they did, so in this case I got something back immediately.

One of the first things I tell people about content creation is to look at your FAQs; what do people generally ask you? This is a great starting point; create content that answers the questions people normally ask you. By listening to the 15 Entrepreneurial Exchange members I have a clearer idea about the issues and concerns they have about adopting social media, I can now create content that addresses these points and I'm sure it will be relevant to many more than the 15 business owners in attendance.

So, the next time you're asked to speak to your local business networking group, careers meeting, industry conference or, graduate's boot-camp don't think of it as a chore, think of it as an opportunity. The questions they ask you are relevant to that community, they will help you understand what it is they need to know about you and what type of content is likely to engage them.

To the Entrepreneurial Exchange members who were present at the Supper Club meeting, thank you for open and frank discussion, I learned lots, and I hope you did too.

Social Media Podcast 44 now available - the "P" Edition

The latest Social Media Podcast is now available for download with the usual banter and light hearted chat about all things social media. Taking part in Social Media podcast Episode 44 we have Gordon White,  Kyle Murdoch, Kirsty Hunter, and Iain Murray.

One common theme seemed to be the letter "P" on this podcast - Pinterest, Pin-It and, Pages were just some of the topics.  I must confess immediately that I learned something since we recorded this podcast; when discussing Twitter's recent acquisition, Iain talked about "Posterious" which I questioned on the podcast thinking it should be "Posterus", which I've since found out could be from the Latin posterus 'following'.  In fact, we were both wrong; the name is Posterous.  Perhaps our friendly expert Linguist, Sally Goetsch can shed some light on what the name might mean?

We also discuss the launch of the new iPad 3 (the podcast was recorded the same day as the UK launch) and we ask why their didn't seem to be the usual buying frenzy surrounding this release.  In fact, we ask if the Glasgow Apple Store really needed the crowd barriers that were neatly stacked outside the shop which was well stocked with the new iPad even at 3pm on launch day.

The good news is that we managed to keep this podcast under one hour but, we still manage to cram in lots of chat from the world of social media including:
  • The iPad3 - Iain and I managed to sneak a look at the latest offering from Apple just before we recorded the podcast.  We also discuss the fact that there didn't appear to be the same buying frenzy this time around.
  • Unfortunately, Tesco don't honour online errors in the same way that Zappos did last year
  • ClikThis App
  • Still no natve Android Apps for DIGG or Pinterest
  • Posterous - we discuss the sale to Twitter, even if we do get the name wrong!
  • Facebook's IPO - Is it already reshaping Facebook.  We also mention how the disclosures are starting to filter through with recent acknowledgements that the number of unique users could have been overstated by 40 million and, the large number of pending law suits against them.
  • Facebook Timeline for Pages - the new Page layout and how that will affect the way some organisations operate their business pages
  • fatBuzz's new "Infographic" page on Facebook
  • Steve Jobs doll, we get a comprehensive answer courtesy of the Morton Fraser Podcast on Image Rights
  • Pinterest - Is it a 'girly' tool and what's making it so popular at the moment.  We also discuss the various copyright issues that are emerging around Pinterest
  • Influence measurements platforms like Klout - how accurate are they?  We look at various platforms such as: TweetReach, PeerIndex, Klout, Tweetstats, Crowd Booster, Twenty Feet and, My Web Career
  • Social Media Monitoring tools - are they overpriced?
  • ROI - will it become less of an issue for organisations?
  • Scheduled Tweets - good or bad practice?  Also, see Jennifer Holloways guest blog on this topic
  • Kony2012 - Is it all it appears to be?  Most of our team didn't really trust the video.
  • Consumption - How often do you watch 100% of a video or, read 100% of an article or blog post?
  • Tim Barlow from Attacat asks, "Are bloggers who charge contributors for guest posts right to do so? Is there better way to monitise a blog?"   We would like to discuss this in greater detail on Podcast 45 so, if you have an opinion please get in touch via the comments below. Or, perhaps you would be willing to come on the podcast and discuss it. Thank you to Tim for the suggestion.
We hope you enjoy the podcast, if you have any comments to make or topics you would like us to discuss please leave them here on the blog or on our Facebook Page.

The Steve Jobs Doll and Image Rights questions answered...

In Social Media Podcast No.42 we raised the question of how the Apple Corporation managed to get a Chinese manufactured doll removed from the market. As is the case with lots of things we discuss on the Social Media Podcast, the question was left unanswered - until now that is!

Those of you who listened to the podcast will recall that we were going to seek some answers to this from our friends at Morton Fraser and they've done us proud by making it the subject of a whole podcast; and what a great podcast it is.

Morton Fraser Partner and Head of Services for Business Team, Austin Flynn is joined by Sam Price - Information Technology and Intellectual Property Lawyer and, Richard McMeeken - Senior Associate and Solicitor Advocate in Morton Fraser's Commercial Litigation team dealing with contentious intellectual property disputes. Austin, Sam and Richard take part in a fascinating discussion around the issue of Image Rights which starts with the case of the Steve Jobs doll but includes references to a number of other celebrities including: David Beckham, Elvis Presley, Diana Princess of Wales, Tiger Woods, Russell Brand, the Spice Girls, Eddie Irvine, John Terry, Max Mosley, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Michael Douglas and Alex Salmond.

During the discussion the team discuss the differences between US and UK Law and, the conflict between the European Court of Human Rights "Rights to Privacy" and "Rights to Freedom of Expression".

It is a truly fascinating look at the whole issue of Image Rights and well worth a listen. Rarely will a question raised on the Social Media Podcast be so well answered than it has been here by the Morton Fraser to to whom we are very grateful.

Please take some time to listen to the podcast and, if you enjoy this one, we are sure you will other podcasts released by Morton Fraser - You can subscribe to their podcast here.

A classical lesson about the importance of a relevant community...

I saw a picture on Facebook today that was shared by Lynn Harris, a friend in real life as well as on Facebook; the picture was accompanied by a story that I found intriguing and fascinating for a number of reasons.

The picture is a screen grab from a video of what appears to be a busker playing the violin at the entrance to L'Enfant Plaza Station in Washington. The comment on the Facebook photo goes on to explain that the violinist was in fact one of the greatest living violinist, Joshua Bell who was playing six classical pieces - among them was a piece by Bach which is widely considered among the most demanding violin works to play. During the 43 minute performance, nobody really stopped to listen for any length of time and he collected just $32 - usually you will pay in excess of $100 per seat to see him perform.

On reading this I was compelled to explore the story further so I went to YouTube where there are several versions of the video with almost 5,000,000 views, I also found a link to the story in the Washington Post - they were behind the experiment. It is worth reading some of the many subsequent comments gathered from commuters that day.

There are several reasons I find this story so interesting and I think, in the context of social media, there are many things we can learn from it:

The importance of building a relevant community
Just before the experiment in January 2007, Joshua had performed for a hushed audience at a sell-out concert in Boston yet in the DC Metro entrance 1100 people walked straight past him on their way to work. People did not know him or, that he was performing an extremely complex piece on a violin worth $3.5 million dollars! Within the classical music community, he is adored and appreciated but in a busy station playing in front of a wide variety of people, he was anonymous.

The audience in the station that morning were intent on getting to where they had to go by a certain time whilst, the audience in Boston were there because they were fans of classical music or Joshua Bell, or both.  The potential station audience was unlimited and it was free for anybody to enjoy but, the concert audience was only available to $100+ ticket holders.

This indicates to me you can have the best and most interesting content in the World and make it available on the most public platforms but, if it's not getting in front of the right people you may as well not bother.

It's not a new story
This is the first time I have seen this story but, the experiment was actually carried out at 7:51 on 12th January 2007 - over 5 years ago. For me, this highlights the legacy benefits of creating good online content. Some of you may have seen this piece before but I noticed it today because someone in my online community shared it on Facebook. The person who shared this particular thread did so on the 16th February this year and it's had 161,231 likes and 144,565 shares in the past 9 days! Therefore, an old story is getting lots of attention because people who find it interesting now have shared it.

At fatBuzz, we are constantly amazed when we see the number of downloads every month of past episodes of our Social Media Podcast - this month we have had over a dozen downloads of a podcast that was recorded 18 months ago!

So, the next time you're creating content, don't just assume you're creating something for people to consume and share that day, week or month; instead, think about your new content as an addition to your online assets. Content will be found and shared by people when they find it interesting and relevant, not just when you find it interesting and relevant.

Was it the right time?
This experiment took place on a weekday during rush hour; I wonder how many more people might have found time to listen a bit longer if it had taken place at a different time?

Not wishing to contradict my earlier comments about legacy but think about when you release new content to get the maximum initial impact, if your community is busy during working hours, think about releasing your content early evening or maybe even over the weekend when they have more time to consume it. Experiment with the release times and monitor the reach you achieve at different times on different days.

Getting the ear of your target audience
Many of the 1100 commuters didn't hear Joshua because they were listening to their own choice of content through their headphones; I wonder if any were actually listening to a Joshua Bell recording as they walked passed him!

Choosing the right platform, or a range of platforms, is important; what's the point of producing everything on video if your community wants to listen to a podcast while they're in the gym. Alternatively, should your content be limited to Twitter messages with links to articles if your community wants to have something to read during a flight? You can't possibly please everybody but repurposing your blog post as a podcast or, producing a blog post about your latest video will help to ensure you get your content out to more people in the fashion they want to receive it.

Extending your community
The Washington Post article offers remarkable feedback from commuters who had earlier walked straight past Joshua but, I wonder what the impact was after they found out who he was? How many went and searched for him online? How many bought one of his recordings? How many shared the story with their friends?

This experiment may, or may not, have unearthed some new classical music enthusiasts or, some new Joshua Bell fans; these may be people that had never considered classical music in the past but, the "experiment" was the catalyst for their new found interest. Is there a promotion, campaign, or event that may help you extend your community?

A final thought...
Imagine, you gather all 1100 commuters in a concert hall and tell them a bit about Joshua and the piece he is about to perform, how many will become converts, fans or ambassadors? How many will be listening to him through their headphones the next time they walk through L'Enfant Plaza Station on their way to work?

Social Media Podcast No 37 The Facebook Edition...and other things!

Let me say from the outset that we made a cardinal error with this podcast - Gordon White, Kyle Murdoch and Iain Murray all gathered to record this episode at the appointed time, sat down to discuss (very roughly) what we would talk about then discovered no one had brought the recorder! Fear not, fatBuzz usually find a fix for such problems and we actually recorded it via one of our large Sony cameras.

The edition does tend to focus a lot of Facebook; largely because we had just completed three "Facebook for Business" New Media Breakfast in the preceding six days! In that period we had all attended the Entrepreneurial Exchange Conference at Gleneagles where much of the speaker's content was about the use of social media in their businesses.

We also discuss the relevancy of your community and the need to develop a following that is relevant to your business and, the usefulness of Twitter and Facebook Lists.

We talk about a couple of influential social media business people, Michelle Mone of Ultimo and Richard McKay of Richard McKay flooring.

Other subjects include:

Out now - Social Media Podcast No.34 - Google's Android and Apple's iOS get the boxing gloves on...

In Social Media Podcast Gordon White and Kyle Murdoch from fatBuzz are joined by Iain Murray or Europa Services and Tim Barlow and Joel Lumsden of Attacat for a lively discussion about the latest news from the world of social media.

During our chat we examine the new Motorola Xoom and inevitably compare it to the new iPad 2 and during that discussion we talk about the absence of other players in the market, particularly Microsoft.

Following this we look at a whole host of subjects with the usual light hearted banter; subjects include the popularity of Twitter, Paper.li and an interesting introduction to Storify. Microsoft also come under fire for their attempt at Quick Response codes with Microsoft Tag and we ask if Google +1 is just the latest attempt by Google to get into Social Media.

The Social Media Podcast would be incomplete without the latest chat about Facebook so, we touch on their continued dominance, the new Facebook Questions and, controlling the News Feed. During this chat we also look at other social media sites like Wayne's World and ask if any of these can really make any dent in the popularity of Facebook.

On the App front, we look at BA's (British Airways) new App for Executive Club members and Tripit.

As usual, the podcast is rounded off with an update about the New Media Breakfast when we bring you details of the next three breakfasts in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Finally, if you would like top be on a podcast either in person or, via Skype, please contact me at gordon@fatbuzz.com and we will try to get it organised.

It has been widely report that by 2013 the majority of content on the internet will be consumed on mobile devices.  Since we first covered this topic in February 2010 we have seen the introduction of the iPad and more recently the iPad2; the iPad introduction was the start of the latest access device - the tablet.  In this presentation Iain Murray will review the current status of hand held mobile devices and explore the type tools that are ideal to participate on social media platforms on the move.

New Facebook Pages - What are the changes?

Some interesting changes to Facebook Pages have just been introduced today and, they're much as we predicted in our Social Media Podcast No.29 recorded back on 21st December last year.  Here are some of the main changes:

Switching Accounts
You can now use Facebook as a Page or as a personal profile so, you now have the option to post to your Page using your personal profile rather than as the Page Admin.

Notifications
This is one that will please most people.  You can now get email notifications when people post or comment on your Page so, now no need to constantly check for activity, you will be notified (optional).

News Feed
There is now a news Feed on your Page.

Tabs
The tabs are now down the left hand column.  Along the top of the page there is now a feed from your photos.

Liking
Pages can now "Like" and post on other Pages.

Sizes
It looks like .fbml pages are now reducing from 520px wide to around 492 - 493px wide.  This will mean anyone using splash pages and welcome pages will need to resize their images otherwise the right hand side will cut off.  if you are a fatBuzz client, we will do this for you but, it may take a day or two because we have so many to change over.
Update 11.15am on 11th February: Thank you to Stephen K Knight (@FanPageGuru) who sent me a message on Twitter, apparently the width issue may be a bug in the Facebook coding and the width will be 520px as it was before so, please don't amend your .fbml page widths just yet)

Full Rollout
The Pages can be switched over to the new layout now however, the full automatic switch to the new Pages will take place on 10th March.

We will be exploring all of the changes in more detail over the next few days and we will let clients know if anything affects them or, what new opportunities are available to you as a result of the changes.

If you have any questions about the changes please ask in the comments box below or, email me at gordon@fatbuzz.com
