Glasgow New Media Breakfast - Share and share a "like"

Great content is the key to engagement on social media but, how easy do you make it for people to share your content?  Do you actively encourage your content consumers to share your content with their communities? Do you make it easy to do and, are they dong it?

This New Media Breakfast will explore sharing.  We will look at ways to get people to share different types of content from; blog posts to video, podcasts to pictures and, tweets to web pages.  There are lots of tools you can use to do this and lots of tips and tricks that will get your content shared on multiple platforms, we will explore these and give you practical examples of how you can utilise them in your daily social media activities.
We will look at these tips, tricks and techniques from both a social media and search point of view; Gordon White of fatBuzz will explore the social media angle and, Tim Barlow from Attacat will take us through the power and value of sharing content from a search perspective.
This presentation is essential for anyone creating content, wether it's a blog or Twitter post or, a Facebook status update - getting your content to your niche market is essential and "sharing" is one of the most effective ways to make this happen.

Social Media Podcast 29 - I've seen the new Facebook Pages

On Social Media Podcast 29 Gordon White, Iain Murray, Malcolm White and Lynsey Wight chat about social media and look back at some of the highlights from 2010.

Gordon reveals the elements of the new Facebook Pages he was lucky enough to see when reportedly a Facebook engineer mistakenly made them live last week. Gordon was working on the fatBuzz Page when the new layout and functions appeared for about 10 mins.

We also discuss the best new device of 2010 with surprising results from our poll. Listen in to her what our community though of this and many other favourites from the past year.

We also reveal a little more about the new fatBuzz offices, the new web site planned for New Media Breakfast and, the new fatBuzz App.

To round off the podcast we have music from Paul Levinson's album "Twice Upon A Rhyme" which has just been re-released as a remastered vinyl. Paul is author of the best selling book "New New Media" and he recently recorded a piece of video on Skype where he addressed the New Media Breakfast audience so, little urprise he chose the title, "Looking for sunsets (in the early morning) as the track for the Social Media Podcast.

Edinburgh New Media Breakfast - Using video for business

More and more people are using video as part of their online communication and, more and more people are consuming video content. Most new mobile phones have video functionality and, as the use Apple's iPad and other tablet type devices becomes more popular, the consumption of video content is predicted to keep on
growing.

The New Media Breakfast will look at the different types of video content and look at some of the successful videos used in current marketing. We will also look at different options for producing video content and the type of equipment for video capture.

Capturing the content is only part of the process, we will take a look at video syndication and how you promote your content and encourage people to watch it and share it.

As per some of the previous breakfasts, Tim Barlow of Attacat will give us a five minute run down on the search engine optimisation aspects of video. He'll look at its impact on rankings and how to get your videos ranking in the likes of Google.

Social Media Podcast 28 now available - the legal edition with Valerie Surgenor



In edition 28 we are joined by Valerie Surgenor, MacRoberts LLP, fresh from her appearance on the New Media Breakfast panel. Valerie explains the meaning of "Libel Tourism" and why it has become much more prevalent. We also discuss ownership of Social Media Profiles in business, the implications of moderating social media content, employers using social media profiles for vetting potential employees and, the inadequacies of many employment contracts.

My comedy debut


Lots of people have been asking how my stand up comedy debut went last Thursday night; I'm pleased to report it all went well. I' equally pleased to tell you I'm glad it's over, I rather think my debut and farewell took place simultaneously.

It was an extremely nerve racking experience for all four of us, not helped by the fact that we didn't actually start until 11pm, I suppose the organisers thought it better to let everyone get a good drink before we went on. That said, the audience of around 500 were very kind and supported all of us extremely well.

I was first up, followed by Gaynor Turner, Jack Konopate and Lorraine Herbison. It was a strange system used to judge the winners where the top two in the text voting (which had been taking place since the Monday) went through to be judged by the panel of three judges, Tam Cowan, Des Clark and one other (apologies, his name escapes me). Jack Konopate and I were the last two with Jack emerging the winner after Tam Cowan's casting vote went in his favour - it probably didn't help that my opening gag was at his expense!

Anyway, I think we were all winners; Jack, Gaynor, Lorraine and myself were truly petrified by the whole affair but we all managed to stand up and get some laughs and, over £40k was raised on the night.

Thank you, on behalf of all of us, for the text votes, the support meant a great deal to all of us and, when we see the cash raised for The Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, it make the sleepless nights very worth while.

Probably my toughest ever challenge!


On Thursday night this week I will take on probably one of the toughest challenges I have ever faced when I take to the floor of the Hilton's Ball Room to do a stand up comedy turn in front of around 500 people.  The events is the annual "Hottest Night of the Year" organised by Charan Gill but, this year is has been renamed the "Funniest Night of the Year".

But I'm not alone, I suspect it's an equally daunting challenge for the three other contestants; Gaynor Turner, Lorraine Herbison and Jack Konopate.  I salute each of them for agreeing to do something so far outside their comfort zone that it beggars belief.  We will each do approximately five minutes stand up in front of a live audience and a panel of expert judges.

The wonderfully funny Janey Godley has been mentoring each of us for the event however, there's only so much one woman can do!  I know Gaynor, Lorraine and Jack will join me in thanking her for giving up her valuable time to make this event happen.

However, the toughness of the challenge is insignificant in comparison to that of the people affected by the cause we are rising funds for, The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice. The patients and staff at the hospice face far greater challenges every day in life.  That's why my three fellow contestants and myself are "happy" to take on this challenge.

We have each been allocated a text voting code which is in operation now.  Each text costs £1 and the proceeds go to the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice.

I would personally like you all to vote for me however, in the interests of fairness, and more importantly to raise as much as we can for the hospice, I have listed each contestants voting codes below.  If you don't know who to vote for, you can simply vote for each of us, there is no limit to the number of votes you place!

I am asking you to do two things to support us:

Social Media Podcast 26 - Live form the "Question Time" New Media Breakfast


Edition 26 is a live recording from the 1st Anniversary of the New Media Breakfast.  The event was "Question Time" style with a panel of 5 answering questions from the floor and, questions sent in via Twitter, Facebook and email.

We had around 70 people in attendance who were treated to champagne or buckfizz on arrival to celebrate the 1st Anniversary of the event.

    We had a range of questions on a variety of subjects including the following:

    Can you explain the difference in my rights as a blog owner if I elect for a moderated or unmoderated blog?

    And, what defines a moderated blog? Is a blog deemed to be moderated if:
    • I choose to approve comments before they are posted
    • I use a spam filter
    • I delete offensive or, irrelevant posts

    We are seeing more and more video online. Will this eventually overtake the written word and how can we stay ahead of the game with videos online?

    What is the panel's advice for getting more people to view your video content?

    Is it possible to have a meaningful social media presence using just one platform? If so, which one?

    As a Non Executive Director of Scotland's largest Children's Charity Aberlour Childcare Trust we are working with fatBuzz to embrace and embed Social Media across our 47 locations in Scotland. What ideas do the panel have to help third sector organisations such as Aberlour get there opportunities, events and needs across to potential Staff, Volunteers, Individual Donors, Corporate Sponsors and Trusts?

    Can you offer any guidelines about what proportion of your marketing budget should be spent on social media?

    What content aggregator tools are available to assist with gathering and monitoring content?

    Social Media Podcast 25 now available


    Yesterday we recorded Social Media Podcast No.25 with a slightly depleted team of just Gordon White, Kyle Murdoch from fatBuzz and, Iain Murray from ConnectedFM - everyone else was off doing other things yesterday - perhaps they new we were doing it and deliberately got out of the office! Nevertheless, we had a great chat and managed to cover lots of topics.

    We talked about the UK launch of Google places and the need to reset the privacy on your Facebook account with a brief description of how to do that. Google Instant also got a mention and we questioned whether this will affect search optimisation strategies in the future - we will follow this up by getting a comment from our search expert, Tim Barlow at Attacat.

    Yesterday was the first time since the fatBuzz launch that we've had a live event where we were responsible for all of the design related work and the social media - so all three divisions (Design & Marketing, Social Media & Event Management) of the company were involved in a single event, we talk a little about that. And, we explain how we managed to use Twitter, some creative thinking and, some corporate branded cupcake boxes to raise an additional £1000 for the Aberlour Child Care Trust.

    Sticking with nonprofits, we review "The Networked Nonprofit" by Beth Kanter and Allison Fine and discuss how some of the thinking in this book is extremely relevant to nonprofits and anyone involved in corporate social responsibility.

    You will also notice we have an audio player at the bottom of this post; this was thanks to the advice of our last guest Sallie Goetsch. We explain her thinking behind this in the podcast - thank you Sallie.

    2 experts join the panel


    We are delighted to announce we have confirmed the last 2 places on the panel for our 1st Anniversary Champagne Breakfast at No.29 next Friday (24th September).

    Gordon McIntyre-Kemp
    Gordon McIntyre-Kemp who presented at the July New Media Breakfast - "Social Media Marketing and the Bottom Line".

    Schooled in Sales and Marketing as a P&G graduate Gordon worked on big brands like Wash &Go, Head and Shoulders and the Launch of Pantene before moving into major account sales for Northern Foods.

    As the Managing Director of First Tuesday in Scotland and the Now-Business network Gordon was a pioneer of online business to business networking and discussion group facilitation in the 1990’s.

    Gordon has recently launched Intelligise Ltd a full service business development practice to advise medium to large sized firms, on social media marketing, sales growth, networking and recruitment strategy.

    Gary Ennis
    Gary is a regular attendee at the New Media Breakfast and has participated in discussion from the floor in the past; we are delighted he has agreed to take a more formal role at this event.

    Gary is the founder and Managing Director of Digital Agency NSDesign. For the past 12 years they have been building websites, providing web hosting, and (more recently) delivering Social Media Training and Consultancy to businesses large and small.

    Winning Entrepreneurs Formal Dinner 2010



    Winning Entrepreneurs are our partners in Edinburgh for the New Media Breakfast and we are delighted with our ongoing relationship with them; they are undoubtedly the best business networking organisation in the East of Scotland.

    I was lucky enough to attend their formal dinner last year and I'm happy to be going along again this year, it is the premier networking event of the Edinburgh business calendar. I'm looking forward to catching up with the many business friends we have in Edinburgh and, probably meeting a few new ones on the night.

    Sorry if this looks like a blatant plug for the event but, I think it is one of the not-to-be-missed events of the year and I'm happy to recommend it to you.

    SPECIAL 1st ANNIVERSARY CHAMPAGNE BREAKFAST


    The next New Media Breakfast in Glasgow on the 24th September is the 1st Anniversary of the New Media Breakfast and to celebrate our first year we are hosting a special 1st Birthday Champagne Breakfast. In addition to the usual food and beverages you will be offered a complimentary glass of champagne or Bucks Fizz. So, come along and help us celebrate a year of breakfast presentations in style.

    For the 1st Anniversary we are hosting a New Media Breakfast Question Time when you get the opportunity to ask our panel of experts anything you want to know about social networking, search optimisation, pay-per-click advertising, audio and video podcasting, legal issues, blogging, apps, plug-ins, content generation and, anything else you can think of.

    In response to recent requests, we will also be allowing additional time for networking and getting to know your fellow attendees – most likely over a refreshing Bucks Fizz!

    We are encouraging people to send questions to us via this blog, Twitter or our Facebook Page. In addition, we will be taking questions from the floor and from Twitterfall on the day.

    Our panel of experts will include:
    Gordon White will play the "David Dimbleby" Chairman role for the event.

    Importing Wordpress to Blogger


    At the New Media Breakfast on blogging in Glasgow last Friday I talked about the need to consider the transportation of your blog should you want to move it from one platform to another. I was under the impression you couldn't import a blog from Wordpress to Blogger and this was backed up by the information I checked on the attached screenshot taken from "Pulsed" blog which you will see was updated in June this year.


    A young lady in the audience contested this fact and I agreed to check it out further and report back in the our blog. It appears both Pulsed and myself got it wrong, I found the following link to instructions on how to do this: Wordpress2blogger

    Thank you to the young lady who pointed this out.  Also, my apologies, I didn't get a chance to catch her after the breakfast, perhaps she can post a comment here so that I can thank her properly for the advice.  I assume this is the App/process she meant, if not perhaps she will be kind enough to let us know if there are other ways to do this.

    Are you a Blogger or a Jogger?


    We were working with two of our chosen charities yesterday (with Kids and Revive MS Support) talking about social media and how they can use various tools to engage and communicate with staff, volunteers, clients, and donors. 

    During lunch, we were discussing jogging and some of the people who had completed 10k and half marathons for the charities and one of the girls commented that she could never do such a thing.  In response, I said this was all right because she could make her own contribution by blogging instead of jogging.

    The comment served as a useful example to all present that the world is made up of lots of different kinds of people; active people who like to get involved and do physical stuff either for fun or, to raise much needed funds for their chosen charities.  Less active people, like myself, might not throw on the running shoes and do a marathon but we can still play an effective part in the whole fundraising process.

    Writing blogs, sharing fundraising news on Facebook and sending out Tweets about the exploits of others is a very valuable contribution; by doing this you immediately widen the reach of the particular persons efforts to include your community and that of anyone who in turn shares it over again.  It's for that very reason that I have been happy to talk about and share information on Kenneth Martin's kidney transplant and his appeal to raise funds for Yorkhill Hospital.  I see, via the Just Giving page, many of my friends have made donations to the appeal and I thank them for that and, it proves the point that blogging, tweeting, and sharing his story on Facebook has made a difference to the appeal.

    So, if you're not inclined to scale a building, run a marathon or zip slide off the Forth Road Bridge don't be too hard on yourself, you can play a valuable role by talking to your community about those who do.

    Welcome to Lynsey - proof that the "Weaving" industry is alive and well in Scotland


    We have a new member in the fatBuzz Team.  We are delighted to introduce Lynsey Wight as the latest addition to the fatBuzz Team.  Lynsey studied marketing and has worked as an account manager with Lloyds TSB and Hewlett Packard.  Lynsey not only impressed us with her knowledge and enthusiasm, she displayed all the right characteristics to be a perfect fit with the fatBuzz culture - read into that what you will!

    I was thinking about Lynsey's new job title the other day when I came across the perfect description of her role; I was reading "The Networked Nonproft" by Beth Kanter & Allison Fine in which she describes the role of a 'Social Network Weaver'.  This is an extract from her description:

    "Network Weaving activities include

    Facilitating authentic conversations that are meaningful to participants. Sometimes these conversations are actionable, and other times they are simply to build relationships.

    Sharing resources, links, and information without any expectation of a direct return from that person.

    Building relationships with network members by doing things like linking to their blog posts and commenting on blogs, friending them online social networks, and celebrating their contributions.

    Working with many different people on multiple channels such as e-mail, Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and even on land at face-to-face meetings

    Treating all members of the network as equals regardless of their formal organisational position.

    Inviting people with different points of view into conversations, and facilitating those conversations so those points of view can be shared.

    Network weavers provide reasons for people to care about causes and organisations. They shape conversation and identify specific ways for people to help...Network weaving is a crucially important aspect of effective social media usage. When we describe the specific ways that organisations can use social media to advance their efforts...weaving the network becomes of paramount importance to organisational success."

    A selfless act worthy of our support


    Kenneth Martin of Block Architects continues to amaze us with his selfless acts. Not only is he donating a kidney to his father to improve his quality of life, he is using the whole experience to help York Hill Hospital buy equipment that will help kids in a similar situation.

    Kenneth is asking for people to donate to his kidney operation appeal, he is also organising other fundraising events such as the online art auction currently running on his blog. We are truly humbled by his efforts and wish him and his father a speedy recovery.

    I know that Kenneth is particularly busy at the moment and, as a business operator, I can appreciate the disruption to his busy working life is considerable but he is not only doing this willingly but also with incredible enthusiasm. I would ask you all to take a look at Kenneth's blog and lend your support. Even if you can't manage any financial donation, I'm sure Kenneth will welcome comments and best wishes for him and his father.

    Social Media Podcast Edition 24 - Sallie Goetsch talks about her work


    In Edition 24 we are privileged to have Sallie Goetsch join us for a chat about her work and the current social media climate in the US.

    Sallie is co-founder of Podcast Asylum, owner of The Author-izer and the Fileslinger Backup Blog.  She is also a ghost writer (having written her first novel at the age of 19). a linguist with special expertise in Latin and Greek and, she is a regular speaker at podcasting and social media conferences.

    Sallie talks about her work with Podcast Asylum, Filesliger Backup Blog and Strategic Name Development, giving us an insight about her work in social media.  We also discuss the current podcasting and social media climate in the US and talk about her guest hosting on the FIR (For Immediate Release) podcast when she fills in for her good friend Shel Holtz.

    New Media Breakfast topic - Blogging

    The next New Media Breakfast dates have now been set and we have decided to have a look at Blogging. Blogs are an important element in online activity and, in lots of cases, they can become the hub of your social networking activity. We will talk about the benefits of a good blog and what they can achieve. We will also take a look at different types of blogs and explore how you can use blogs for different types of communication.

    We will look at how to create a blog and, what options are available for people wanting to have a good blog presence. We will explore some of the functionality you can add to your blog to make it more appealing to readers. This will include the ability to automatically share your blog content on other social networking platforms.

    Other areas we will consider include; multiple-authoring, guest authors, attracting readers and, how to encourage comments.
